Only a doctor can own a medical practice. A medical spa that performs laser treatment and botox is considered a medical practice in Illinois. Many nurse practitioners are capable of giving those treatments, but the nurse cannot be a part owner of the medical spa, even though the medical spa may provide services that lay people can perform. The nurse practitioner must not be paid on a percentage basis, or on a per patient basis, but there are ways to legally compensate the nurse practitioner for his or her work. Sometimes the nurse practitioner can lease equipment to the medical doctor, and sometimes the nurse practitioner can provice administrative services. The doctor can also pay the nurse practitioner for actual work done, aw a W2 or 1099 employee.
